Mar 2012 Downer Awarded Rail Contracts

Downer EDI Limited (Downer) announced today that it had been awarded a rolling stock contract for the supply of Downer Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) Model SD70ACe/LCi locomotives to BHP Billiton Iron Ore in the Pilbara for the next five years

The first new locomotives are expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2012. The contract has a core value of $292 million with options offered that could bring the total value to over $400 million.

The Chief Executive Officer of Downer, Grant Fenn, said: “The ability of Downer and Electro-Motive Diesel to provide support at the front line has been second to none and underpins this deal. Integral with this contact is the further build up of Downer support for customers in Western Australia.”

The SD70ACe/LCi locomotive and its key components and systems are designed and built by EMD, a member of the Caterpillar family of companies. Downer and EMD have worked together for more than 60 years supplying and maintaining locomotives in Australia. Read More

A worker has died in an accident erecting a tower on the Powerlink Western Downs Powerline Project.

A MAN was killed when a section of a powerline tower fell on him in a workplace accident near Dalby yesterday.

The man, believed to be 45, was working to erect a high voltage powerline tower on the Jandowae-Macalister Rd, north-west of Dalby.

A Dalby police spokesman said a crane was in the process of lifting a section to the top of the tower when a piece of the structure collapsed on the man just before 9am. read more

Mar 2012 Claims BER builder Reed Construction owes millions

BUILDING giant Reed Constructions - one of the biggest contractors to the federal government's Building the Education Revolution scheme - will be investigated by the NSW government amid claims it owes thousands of sub-contractors up to $80 million.

In a further blow to the building and construction industry after the failure of builder Kell & Rigby last month, it emerged yesterday that Reed was facing significant cashflow problems.

Reed was locked in talks with the NSW government yesterday after it was alleged the company had yet to be paid for several major jobs - a claim NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell later disputed.

"For some time now, both the Office of Roads and Maritime (Services) and the BER program office have been making payments to Reed Construction, in advance of what is required, to ensure that Reed Construction had the capacity to pay its sub-contractors," Mr O'Farrell said yesterday. "I'm happy . . . to go and ensure that inquiries are made about whether that obligation by Reed has been fulfilled." read more

Feb 2012 NewSat hits out at NBN satellite claims

NewSat has broken its silence on whether its planned Ka-band Jabiru satellites could provide adequate capacity to service NBN Co’s needs. Not only could the company provide it, but it could do so at a fraction of the cost that NBN Co is currently set to pay, according to NewSat CEO and founder Adrian Ballintine.

Ever since NBN Co announced recently that it had contracted Space Systems/Loral to build two Ka satellites for around $620 million – part of a total project cost of around $2 billion – arguments have raged as to whether the company needed to build rather than lease satellites.

NBN Co CEO Mike Quigley told a Senate estimates hearing last week that “having the Australian taxpayer own these new satellites is the right answer,” arguing that suitable capacity did not exist otherwise. Optus also noted that its fleet of Ku-band satellites did not have enough spare capacity for the job. read more

A little something to brighten your day.

This Cartoon depicts the way a project really works in the eyes of the sceptics.

A joke using a series of emails that were about providing Free Services and the use of the "Big Carrot" with the promise of great things to come.

High-capacity satellites to provide broadband to rural and remote Australians

The delivery of high-speed internet to some of the most remote communities in Australia has taken a leap forward following NBN Co’s selection of Space Systems/Loral (SS/L), a leading manufacturer of commercial broadband satellites, to build two next-generation Ka-band satellites.

The satellites, which are planned to launch in 2015, are designed to provide high-speed broadband coverage to around three percent of premises outside the reach of the NBN’s fibre optic and fixed-wireless services, including outback areas and Australia’s external territories such as Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Macquarie Island and the Cocos Islands.

The contract, valued at approximately $620 million, follows a comprehensive, two-year procurement process undertaken by NBN Co. The contract is part of a total investment of approximately $2 billion that is required to deliver the NBN Long Term Satellite Service. Other agreements will cover the ground systems, end-user equipment and the space launch. Read More
